Instructions:
- With this interactive game, you can practice reading and using a machinist's precision steel ruler with English graduations (1/32 and 1/64 inches) and Metric graduations (0.5 mm and 1 mm). The game also includes 1/10 and 1/100 inch decimal rulers.
- You can play this game using either a mouse or a touchscreen.
- Press the Play Game button to begin.
- A measurement to select will appear above the ruler image.
- Move your mouse (or slide your finger on a touchscreen device) over the ruler image until the green bar aligns with the correct mark for the displayed measurement.
- To lock your answer, click on the ruler (or lift your finger on a touchscreen device).
- For each correct answer, you will be awarded points. Your score is displayed on the left side of the Results Bar below the ruler.
- Points are awarded based on the table below.
Level Time Limit Points 1 20 seconds 10 2 17 seconds 20 3 14 seconds 30 4 11 seconds 40 5 8 seconds 50 6 5 seconds 60 7 2 seconds 70 - Each time you correctly answer 10 measurements, you will advance to the next level. Your current level is indicated in the Results Bar below the ruler image.
- The timer is represented to the right of the score in the Results Bar. As time passes, the bar will get shorter.
- If time runs out before you make a selection, you will receive a strike for selecting "0."
- For each incorrect answer, you will receive a strike. After three strikes, your game is over. The number of strikes you have received is indicated on the right side of the Results Bar below the ruler image.
- Click the Settings button to adjust your preferences for the game.
- Timer: The default setting is On. Select Off to remove the time limit and have unlimited time to answer.
- Sounds: The default setting is On. Select Off to disable all game sounds.
- Graduation: The default setting is "Inches Random" (includes 32nds, 64ths, 10ths, and 100ths). Another random setting is "Metric Random" (includes 0.5 mm and 1 mm). You can also select any individual graduation.
- Simplifying fractions: The default setting is On. This setting applies only to the 1/32 and 1/64 graduations. When the setting is turned on, fractions in the questions will be simplified. For example, instead of being asked to select 8/32 or 16/32, you may be asked to select 1/4 or 1/2. When the setting is turned off, all questions will use unsimplified fractions, such as 8/32 or 16/32, without reducing them to their simplest forms.
- Mode: The default mode is "Find". You can also choose "Type". In Type mode, numbers appear below the ruler, and you can enter the correct answer by clicking these numbers or using your keyboard. Once you've entered your answer, click "Submit Answer."
- The current settings are always displayed in the lower left-hand corner of the ruler image.
- If you refresh your browser, all settings will revert to default, and your score will reset.
